In
2001 Ben Casey published a book of essays and photographs which
were observations about life not only in Pamlico County, but these
United States and the world. Some included bits of advice gleaned
from his mother who had recently passed away, hence the name of
the book, Mama Always Said.
AC Snow, noted retired editor and newspaper columnist in Raleigh,
NC, said this of Casey’s work in Mama Always Said, “Reading
Ben Casey’s work is like sitting across the table from Ben
Casey with a cup of coffee. He flavors the moments with a bit of
sugar, (humor), a dash of cream, (earthbound philosophy), and the
caffeine of compassion that abides deep within him. You leave feeling
good about him and better about yourself.”
Reverend Bob Inskeep, former morning radio personality on WRAL 101.5
FM in Raleigh, NC, now the Associate Pastor of Raleigh’s First
Presbyterian Church, said, “Ben Casey, son of Pamlico County,
is like a lighthouse – a warm beacon that attracts all the
interesting people, and a bright light that illuminates each one’s
unique story. It is a gift of light that lets Ben humbly draw out
the divine from the simplicity of life. You don’t have to
read Ben Casey. Just open the book and let the voices talk to you.”
Mary Duke Biddle Semans of Durham, NC, wrote, “Reading this
is like holding joy in one’s hand. The flavor is that of a
Southern country tonic.”
TimValentine, retired from the US Congress, NC 2nd District, labeled
Casey’s writing as “laced with solid, old-fashioned
honesty and wit. Like a stroll along the backroads of Eastern North
Carolina, it is entertaining and full of surprises. Mama Always
Said is pleasant and pithy reading, a very meaningful contribution
from the pen of a keen observer of life lived by most of us hereabouts.”
